Palazzo da Mula

Palazzo da Mula, Murano

The Palazzo da Mula is a Venetian villa on the island of Murano in the lagoon of Venice , on the sub-island of San Pietro Martire , on the south bank of the Canale degli Angeli , at the Ponte Vivarini bridge , which leads to the main Murano island of San Donato .

The palace is one of the last testimonies to the many magnificent villas that were built on Murano in the 15th and 16th centuries. Murano was one of the Venetians' favorite summer stays because they were convinced of the health benefits of this place. Originally there were a few villas with extensive gardens on the island, but today the Palazzo da Mula is integrated into a row of houses.

architecture

The palace, which dates from the turn of the 14th to the 15th century, shows the late Gothic architecture typical of Venetian architecture. It is made of reddish bricks, covered with a tiled roof, the decorative elements are made of white Istrian marble . In contrast to many Venetian palaces, the portal on the water side does not lead directly into the canal, but onto the narrow street that accompanies the canal.

coat of arms

The main facade of the palace is that facing the canal and is completely geometrically structured. The arched central portal is flanked on each side by a small high arched window and a narrow pointed arched window that almost reaches the floor. The central portal in the Piano Nobile corresponds to four pointed arched openings (quadrifora) supported by marble columns. In addition, above the ground floor windows there are two pointed arched, two-part openings (bifora) with quatrefoil . All these openings lead to a limestone balcony supported by a console . In the spaces between the windows there are marble panels with the coat of arms of the client. Two round windows decorated with different tracery on the arched sides of the side doors complete the decor. The narrow marble frieze, which optically separates the piano nobile from the mezzanine floor , underlines the overall delicate facade decor of the waterfront. This is interrupted by an aedicule , which contains a figure of a saint. The mezzanine floor has four almost square windows and a small marble field in the middle above the aedicule, at the corners these are framed by two tondi.

The garden front is - comparable to the Brenta Villas - designed less representative and corresponds in its design to the main facade. The basement is divided by a wide middle door, flanked to the right and left by two tall rectangular windows. The piano nobile is opened by a door system made up of three French windows with pointed arches (trifora). The original balcony parapet was replaced by a now rusty railing. To the right and left of the central opening are two pointed arched windows. The mezzanine adjoining the piano nobile, which was added in the 16th century, is also opened here through four square windows. A cornice surrounds the entire building .

garden

Behind the Palazzo da Mula is one of the few remaining gardens on the island. At that time a visitor to Murano could admire many of these gardens, gardens shaped the image of the island. However, in the course of time they were increasingly displaced by residential buildings. A fine example of Byzantine art has been preserved in the garden of the Palazzo da Mula, namely a round marble arch with a delicately hewn frieze .
