The Palazzo des Capitano del Popolo is a historic building in Perugia , Umbria .

It is located in the Porta di San Pietro district , on Piazza Giacomo Matteotti, and is the seat of the Corte d'appello (Court of Appeal) and the Prosecutor General of the City of Perugia, as well as other municipal offices.

history

Also known as Palazzo del Bargello , it was built for the transfer of magistrates between 1473 and 1481 by Gasparino d'Antonio and Leone di Matteo from Lombardy. The history of the palace goes hand in hand with the history of the opposite Piazza Grande (later "del Sopramuro", today " Giacomo Matteotti "), originally an old artificial dam, which in the second half of the 13th century instead of a steep terrain directly in front built on the walls of the Etruscans. The layout of the square is actually based on a retaining wall (hence the old name) that sits on the cliff and is held in place by 14th century vaults ("arconi") to the east, which were used as warehouses in the following century.

The portal

The complex was built to close the square. It looks like an elegant Renaissance building with Gothic features . Here, as the seat of the Capitano del Popolo , part of the work of the city administration was carried out. The portal resembles that of the nearby Palazzo dei Priori , and in its original version the building had an equally similar crenellated ring at the top , which was demolished after an earthquake in 1741 . The third floor was later removed. The building was then rebuilt and renovated by Luigi Vanvitelli from Campania.

There are four twin windows on the facade , which are surrounded by garlands; The auctioneers' loggia is on the first floor and is supported by large consoles . The portal, adorned with thinly twisted columns, is surmounted by two Peruvian griffins snatching a calf and a ram, and by a lunette with an allegory of Justitia in the center, which is depicted as a smiling woman with a sword: this is alluded to by the im lower part of the inscription "Iustitia Virtutem Domina" ("Justitia the woman of virtues") from 1472.

To the left of the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo there are pointed arches that lead to the Loggia dei Lanari and the covered market from 1932, as well as a large panoramic terrace with a view of the Wall, Assisi , Monte Subasio and Torgiano .

Old University

Front of the old university

The adjacent right palace began in 1453 with the construction of the ground floor with pointed arches. Thirty years later, Pope Sixtus IV decided to move the seat of the Studium Perusinum there - today's University of Perugia , one of the first free universities in Italy - between 1490 and 1520 the next two floors with Renaissance cross windows were added (a work that Fiorenzo di Lorenzo ).

The building has been the seat of the judicial authorities since the beginning of the 19th century.
