Palazzo di Spagna a San Geremia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Palazzo di Spagna a San Geremia , also Palazzo Frigerio , is a palace in Venice in the Italian region of Veneto . It is located in the Cannaregio sestiere in Lista di Spagna , halfway between the train station and the Church of San Geremia . The street used to be a canal ( Rio dei Sabbioni ), but it was filled in in 1844. In the past centuries, foreign embassies had settled in this area, which the government of the Republic of Venice wanted to see as far away as possible from the Doge's Palace , the seat of government.

history

The palace belonged to the Frigerio or Frizerio family . Andrea Frigerio was Chancellier Grande in 1575 . It was a family of wealthy merchants who owned a sewing thread shop in the Drapperia of Rialto with the Albero d'Oro . In October 1613 Giovanni Battista Antonio Frizerio sold the palace to Francesco Maria Renier Zeno , who in 1647 was the procurator of San Marco . The Zeno family had the palace given the late Baroque facade. The heirs rented the building to the Spanish government. In the 19th century the palace fell to Count Giuseppe Monteallegre . Today the building is part of a hotel. There is a garden behind the house.
