Pelden Gyatsho
Pelden Gyatsho (also: Palden Gyatso ; Tibetan : dpal ldan rgya mtsho ; * 1933 in Panam, Tibet ; † November 30, 2018 in McLeod Ganj , India ) was a Buddhist monk. He was arrested during the Chinese invasion of Tibet and spent 33 years in Chinese prisons. After his release in 1992 he went into exile in Dharamsala (Northern India).
Life
Pelden Gyatsho's birthplace Panam is located on the Nyangchu River between Gyangzê and Samzhubzê . Gyatsho entered Gadong Monastery as a novice in 1943. During the Chinese invasion, he was appointed a fully ordained monk of the Gelug School in 1952. He later lived in Drepung Monastery near Lhasa .
After the Tibet uprising in 1959 , Pelden Gyatsho was arrested by the Chinese authorities. He spent the next 33 years in various Chinese prisons and labor camps. He was forced to attend re-education classes and tortured, resulting in irreversible physical harm. However, he continued to follow the Dharma .
In 1992 Pelden Gyatsho was released. He fled to Dharamsala in India, the place of the Tibetan government in exile. There he wrote his autobiography Fire Under The Snow (German edition: Ich, Palden Gyatso, Mönch aus Tibet ), which has been translated into numerous languages.
During his subsequent travels through America and Europe, he became politically active as an opponent of the Chinese occupation of Tibet and as a contemporary witness of long-term Chinese imprisonment. In 1995 he was heard by the UN Human Rights Commission in Geneva.
Pelden Gyatsho lived in Dharamsala and devoted himself to his Buddhist studies.
