Palenc

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Palenc ( Sorbian for schnapps ) is the name of a popular Sorbian drinking song that is sung on many occasions. The first stanza of this folk song can be found under the title "Reason to Drink" in the first volume of the folk songs of the Wends in Upper and Lower Lusatia by Leopold Haupt and Johann Ernst Schmaler , published in 1841 .

There are several different versions of the text of the fourth stanza; Occasionally other stanzas are sung, for example Łužica, Łužica, ta dyrbi serbska być (“The Lausitz , the Lausitz, they must be Sorbian”). Several different interpretations of "Palenc" have been released on phonograms.

Hdyž ja nimam palenca, to mje boli wutroba.

Holčka, holčka, ta dyrbi luba być!
Hdyž yes nimam holčičku, to mam zrudnu wutrobu.

Analogous translation:

The schnapps, the schnapps, must be drunk!
My heart aches when I don't have schnapps.
The schnapps, the schnapps, must be drunk!
The beer, the beer, it has to be drunk!
If I don't have enough beer, my strength cannot grow.
The beer, the beer, it has to be drunk!
The gentleman drank the wine, the wine.
Now we've chased away the gentleman and we drink him ourselves.
The wine, the wine, now the whole village drinks him.
The girl, the girl, it must be lovely!
When I don't have a girl my heart is sad.
The girl, the girl, it must be lovely!
