A drinking song is a song that is mainly sung at social events in connection with the consumption of alcoholic beverages. Often it is laid out as a verse song or as a canon . Drinking songs can be found in almost all cultures on earth.

history

It is difficult to determine the exact origin of the drinking songs, especially since the drinking song is probably older than the written language. However, there is evidence that the ancient Romans used to sing at their orgies (can be read e.g. from Cicero ).

In taberna from the Carmina Burana may be mentioned as a medieval example . Numerous drinking songs have come down to us since the late Middle Ages and especially from the Renaissance, for example from the oeuvre of Hans Leo Haßler , Orlando di Lasso and Oswald von Wolkenstein . Even then, tendencies towards mocking and critical reflection can be identified, for example in Vitrum nostrum gloriosum , which is laid out in the manner of a Gregorian chant , but sings about the enjoyment of wine and mocks the clergy with difficult musical means.

In the late 18th and 19th centuries, the drinking song received special care in student circles: countless varieties of student songs were created, whereby the borderline between the actual drinking song, the joke and mocking songs (sometimes with a historical touch ), rag songs , wandering songs and the political songs are not always clearly visible. For the common pub evenings of the students, the songs were combined in specially created Kommers books , which were appropriately provided with so-called beer nails so that they would not be damaged by contact with the inevitably flowing water. The tradition of the student drinking song froze in the Wilhelmine era ; In addition to the canon of official songs, there were hardly any new songs.

The literary-musical program Lyrische Weinlieder (2007) by the songwriter Pilo provides an overview of wine and drinking songs from ancient times to modern times .
