Pam Muñoz Ryan
Pam Muñoz Ryan (born December 25, 1951 in Bakersfield ) is an American - Mexican children's and youth author.
Life
Pam Muñoz grew up in Bakersfield, California . Her grandparents were Mexican immigrants. She attended Washington Junior High and Bakersfield High School . She then studied at Bakersfield Junior College and San Diego State University . After graduation, she worked as a coordinator for the Red Cross at Camp Pendleton . She married Jim Ryan and they both moved to San Diego County . There she worked as a teacher in Escondido for three years . After the birth of her children (two daughters and two twin brothers), she worked part-time in a preschool. She studied for the Masters Degree in Post-Secondary Education , with the aim of teaching literature to children. At this point, a professor encouraged her to write her own books.
In 1994 Pam Muñoz Ryan published her first children's book, One Hundred is a Family . She has now published over 30 books that have also been translated into Spanish. She has received numerous awards including the National Education Association Cand Human Rights Award , the Virginia Hamilton Award for Multicultural Literature, and the Willa Cather Literary Award . In 2015 she received the German Youth Literature Prize in the children's book category for her book Der Träumer .
