action

David Seville , the foster father of the three ground squirrel boys Alvin , Simon and Theodore , has to travel to Europe. Despite Alvin's request to come along, David travels alone after hiring Miss Miller to look after the boys. In a bar the Chipmunks meet the ground squirrel girls Brittany , Eleonor and Jeanette , the Chipettes . At a play station, Alvin and Brittany battle it out for victory in a balloon race around the world, and when Alvin loses, he and Brittany fight over which of them would win a real balloon race. The siblings Claudia and Klaus Furschtien , who aresitting not far from the children, becomeaware of them through the dispute and decide to abuse the children for their own plans, the aim being to deliver diamonds worth five million dollars to recipients located around the world and the corresponding Pick up payment. In addition, this action would beinconspicuousto a certain Jamal because of the children he did not know; that Jamal had already cost the siblings several million dollars. Claudia and Klaus disguise their intentions against the Chipmunks and the Chipettes by inviting them to a balloon race around the world and offering the winning team a prize of 100,000 dollars. To the great dismay of the others, Alvin and Brittany immediately agree to the proposal.

The next day, the Chipmunks manage to use a manipulated tape recording of a telephone conversation with their foster father, Miss Miller, to convince Alvin, Simon and Theodore to come to David in Europe. Instead, the Chipmunks go to the starting point of the supposed race. Both teams receive cards with different routes, and as an alleged proof that they have gone to the required stations, they should each exchange one of the dolls given to them for the doll that can be found at the individual station and bring it with them. However, Claudia is in secret contact with informants who are supposed to monitor and confirm the exchange of the dolls. The servant of the Furschtiens learns of the actual intentions of the two as well as the travel destinations of the children and passes the information on to the named Jamal, who in turn instructs his people to remove the dolls from the children, which does not succeed even after several travel stops.

In Athens, the Chipmunks run past David by accident without noticing him. David, on the other hand, does not believe that it is his boys whom he has run into, and travels on.

In Egypt, the Chipettes are held in the palace of a young prince who has been commissioned by Jamal to get the dolls. Brittany is forced to marry the prince. On the eve of the engagement party, which has already been scheduled for the next day, Brittany receives a baby penguin that has been torn from his family as a present. That same night, the Chipettes manage to retrieve the dolls and flee the palace, with Eleanor secretly taking the baby penguin with her. Regardless of the race, the Chipettes decide to bring the sick penguin back to Antarctica to live with his family. However, the deviation from their original route is noticed by Claudia's informants and communicated to her, so that Claudia fears that the girls have understood the real purpose of the world trip and would now try to escape with the diamonds and the money. She instructs her informants to steal the dolls from the girls. In the Antarctic, with the help of the penguins, the Chipettes only just manage to thwart this intention, but one of the dolls tears apart and the diamonds inlaid there fall out. The girls open another doll and find a wad of money in it. Now that they recognize the real plans of Claudia and Klaus, they think the boys are in great danger and go in search of them.

In the meantime, Theodore has been turned from an indigenous tribe into a supposed ruler, and Alvin and Simon have been condemned to serve him. Using an inscription, however, Simon finds out that Theodore should be sacrificed as ruler on the next full moon. In fact, this also applies to the other two. At the last moment, however, they are rescued from their predicament by the Chipettes and start their journey home with them.

In the meantime it turns out that Jamal works for the international police at the airport and investigates diamond smuggling. The servant of the Furschtiens is exposed and arrested by Claudia as an informant. You and Klaus are waiting for the children at the airport, and the Chipmunks and Chipettes let them know that they have seen through their game. Then they flee with the dolls from the two smugglers, but they manage to hold the children by pretending to have Miss Miller under their control. Claudia and Klaus push the children into their car; When it drives off, however, Alvin manages to alert David, who is also leaving the airport, to his request for help, and David and the rushing Jamal immediately take up the chase. The getaway car is involved in an accident by Miss Miller, who is on the way to the airport and driving in the wrong lane, so that David and Jamal can catch up with it. The Furschtiens are arrested and the children and David are driven home by Miss Miller.

Reviews

In the May 25, 1987 issue of the Washington Post, Hal Hinson describes the film as “delicious pleasure” and, especially for fans of the Chipmunks, “enjoyment”. Although the quality of the animation is not on a Disney level and the film is plot-difficult, the story in which the boys and their friends, the Chipettes, are unsuspecting accomplices of a ring of diamond smugglers, moves quickly and there is plenty Action. The Chipettes are more than just additions to the Chipmunks. Brittany, in particular, is a new star for the Chipmunks films.

“Cartoon whose characters were brought to life in 1958 by the composer Ross Bagdasarian; Decent entertainment for children, which was accompanied by a lot of music. "

nomination

The film was nominated in 1988 for the Young Artist Award in the category "Best Motion Picture - Animation".

Trivia

In contrast to the television series, the names of the chipmunks in this film are pronounced in German. This explains the changed spelling in the film title with "Alwin" instead of "Alvin".
