Pamilacan is an island in the Philippines , south of Bohol , with an area of around 150 hectares . It forms a barangay (administrative unit) of the municipality of Baclayon and has 1,422 inhabitants (as of 2010).

origin of the name

The name Pamilacan is derived from the word pamilac , which means something like 'big fish hook' and refers to the original main source of income for the islanders. They lived mainly from dolphin and whaling until 1998 when it was banned by law. Today the island is considered a starting point for dolphin and whale watching .

history

During the Spanish colonial era , Pamilacan served as a guard post. For this purpose, the Spanish built a fort around 200 years ago on the northeast side of the island , which together with similar buildings on Bohol and Panglao forms a network.
