Pan is a free newsreader first published on July 30, 1999 .

In addition to viewing and sending articles, Pan also allows file attachments to be downloaded and article content to be saved for entire threads or groups for offline reading. It was originally developed for Unixoid systems , but can now run on all common operating systems. Pan requires GTK2 .

Pan was originally developed by Matt Eagleson. The development team now also includes Charles Kerr and Christophe Lambin. The name was originally an acronym for "Pimp Ass Newsreader", but is now an own name without a long form.

After the further development of Pan fell asleep for a while at the end of 2003, Charles Kerr began to work on a complete new version in C ++ . Since April 2006 beta versions of the new version have been published at short intervals , which are characterized, among other things, by a significantly increased speed, lower memory consumption and the simultaneous, automatic support of several news servers .
