Walter Mende

Walter Rainer Mende (* 14. July 1944 in Oels , District Oels in Lower Silesia ; † 11. August 2018 in Leverkusen ) was a German politician of the SPD .

Life and work

Mende was born the son of Erich Mende (later CDU ), who later became chairman of the FDP and Vice Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany , and grew up in North Rhine-Westphalia after the war . The parents separated when he was three years old. After graduating from high school in Düsseldorf , he studied law in Cologne and Marburg , where he passed the first state examination in 1968, the second state examination followed in 1972 in Cologne. 1973 Mende entered the civil service. 1975 doctorate he attended the University of Cologne Dr. jur. He has been a lawyer since he left the office of Lord Mayor of Leverkusen .

Political party

Mende had been a member of the SPD since he was a student. He was appointed group chairman of the SPD in the 2002 Council selected the city of Leverkusen. He held this office until he was voted out of the parliamentary group on March 21, 2012, when Peter Ippolito was elected as the new group chairman.

Public offices

In 1989 Mende was elected senior city director by the City Council of Leverkusen , and after the abolition of the dual administration he became the city's first directly elected mayor in 1994 . He lost this office in 1999 in the runoff election against Paul Hebbel , CDU.

Mende was also proposed and elected in 1993 for the post of city director of Düsseldorf. Mende did not accept this election, however, because it could not be ruled out that it came about with votes from the Republicans.
