Pan South African Language Board

The Pan South African Language Board ( Afrikaans : Pan-Suid-Afrikaanse Taalraad, abbreviated: PanSALB ) is a South African authority of the national arts and culture ministry based in Pretoria , the capital of South Africa . Its purpose is to establish and promote multilingualism, to develop the eleven official languages ​​of South Africa (as well as the languages Khoe , San and the South African sign language ) and to protect language rights. The Pan South African Language Board, for example, made isiZulu binding in writing .

Legal basis

The PanSALB was set up by Act No. 59 of the South African Parliament of 1995 ( Act No. 59/1995 , also known as the PanSALB Act ). A legal amendment took place in 1999. Among other things. this defines the special language status of liturgical languages and minority languages ​​of immigrants. The law explicitly names the following community languages ​​to be respected ( PanSALB Act 8.2.b ): German , Greek , Gujarati , Hindi , Portuguese , Tamil , Telugu , Urdu .

Restructuring

In 2015 there was massive criticism of the personnel policy of this institution, in the course of which the previous Director General Mxolisi Zwane was dismissed. Rakwena Reginald Mpho Monareng was succeeded as General Director of the facility on July 1, 2015 .

The authority was formally dissolved in January 2016 by the Minister of Art and Culture Nathi Mthethwa and placed under the control of the National Heritage Council (NHC) in order to realign it .
