During his school days he was involved in the - then illegal - ANC Youth League in Klaarwater between 1982 and 1983 and was later chairman from 1987 to 1989. During this time, he also began his professional career as an organizer with the Food and Allied Workers Union , which he held between 1988 and 1989.

He was then from 1989 to 1990 both chairman of the union of the inactive workers (Unemployed Workers Union) in the south of the then province of Natal and secretary of the South African Youth Congress there . Since 1990 he has been secretary of the ANC Klaarwater branch. On June 14, 2012, he appointed General Mangwashi Victoria "Riah" Phiyega to be the first woman to head the South African police force . Since May 26, 2014 he has been Minister of Arts and Culture and was also a member of the Ramaphosa I cabinet in this position .
