Pan Tau (German "Herr Tau") is a 14-part children's series that is to be published in the course of 2020. It is a new edition of the German-Czechoslovak co-production of the same name , which was broadcast from 1970 to 1978, for the first time on December 13, 1970 on ARD television and later also on East German television .

Pan Tau is a friendly gentleman, wears an elegant suit and is always there where families need it. Although he seems to come from a completely different time and doesn't speak a word, he understands everything and reacts to problems in his very own way. He can do magic, appears apparently by chance in families of all social classes and just by touching the melon on his head ensures a magical change of perspective. In doing so, he seems to override all laws of physics.

It is a new edition of the German-Czechoslovakian co-production of the same name between WDR , the Prague film studios Barrandov and the Czechoslovak television company ČST for the 50th anniversary of the TV. The original series was broadcast between 1970 and 1978, and from 1973 also on GDR television. The title character Pan Tau is an always friendly smiling, very elegant, good-natured man in a Stresemann suit with a bowler hat, an umbrella and a white carnation in the buttonhole. In addition, with a characteristic gesture on his bowler hat, he can make things appear or disappear, for example, or transform himself into a small doll. Pan Tau did not speak in the first 26 episodes and instead communicated in a pantomime- dance-like manner with people, mainly children.
After years of negotiations, the production company Caligari Film- und Fernsehproduktion had secured the rights for the new edition. The Caligari film and television production received 1,408,000 euros from the Filmförderungsanstalt , 350,000 euros from the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW and 800,000 euros from the FilmFernsehFonds Bayern . Directed by Franziska Meyer Price .
The title role was cast with British comedian Matt Edwards .
The 14-part series remake is to be shown for the first time on the 50th TV anniversary, thus in the course of 2020. It will be broadcast in Germany on ARD.
