The Pan-African University (also: Pan-African University or Pan-African Network University , PAU ) is a research and teaching network of university centers in five African regions ( North , East , South , West and Central Africa ). The PAU goes back to an initiative of the African Union.

Emergence

The African Union has been following the Pan-African University project since 2003, when it was announced at a first ministerial conference in Johannesburg . Finally, in 2008, under the leadership of the Commission for Human Resources, Science and Technology of the African Union, work began on establishing the Pan-African University. It is intended to develop the level of higher education, science and technology in Africa to an academically high (excellence) level. The focus is on the training of graduates and doctoral students as well as applied research. The institution was officially founded in December 2011. The PAU will be set up at existing universities in Africa. International partners take over the sponsorship for individual locations.

Locations

The following five main topics and locations were selected:

PAU Institute of Water and Energy Sciences (including Climate Change) ( PAUWES )

PAU Institute on Basic Sciences, Technology and Innovation ( PAUSTI )

PAU Institute of Earth and Life Sciences ( PAULESI )

PAU Institute of Governance, Society and Social Science ( PAUGHSS )

  • Space : Southern Africa (University and partners have yet to be named)

PAU Institute for Space Sciences

aims

African Union Education Commissioner De-Paul Ikounga said in a speech in 2013:

“The overall goal of PAU is to develop African solutions from Africans, in Africa, for Africa. Just the opposite is the case today. African students studying in Europe write their master thesis on European, but not African problems. "

The universities mentioned are intended to serve as hubs with which other African universities can network. With the support of donors, study programs are to be set up at master's and doctoral level. The emerging network universities should also take part in international academic exchanges. A central rectorate was set up in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa for the administration of the PAU , which - like the PAUWES Institute in Algeria - is also supported by Germany. It coordinates the various activities of the Pan-African University and ensures uniform quality standards.

The PAU is intended to counter the brain drain of qualified specialists and executives and to ensure that young scientists and decision-makers develop and implement new strategies for African and global challenges as part of their future activities.
