history

Panchimalco means Panti = flag in Nahua ; Chimali = shield; co = particle for place. The pre-Columbian population were Toltecs . In 1548 the place was mentioned for the first time in Latin script. During the Spanish conquest, the place was called El Fuerte (the fortress) because of its concave shape, which was strategically easy to defend . The temple of Panchimalco was covered with earth. In 1730 the Iglesia de la Santa Cruz de Roma was built on it, its whitewashed baroque facade is 40 meters wide and 18 meters high. The altarpiece was created in the French Baroque style. The roof is supported by 18 columns made of balsam wood . On February 27, 1975, the building was upgraded to the Monumento Nacional Historico by parliament . In documents from 1689 and 1740, the place operates under the name Santa Cruz de Panchimalco . In 1770 the region belonged to the San Jacinto guardianship . In 1776, the administrative districts of New Spain were redistributed according to the reform of Carlos III . The region now belonged to the Partido de San Salvador. From 1824 to 1836 it belonged to the Department de San Salvador . San Salvador was temporarily the seat of government of the Central American Confederation , which is why Panchimalco belonged to the Distrito Federal Centroamericano from 1824 to 1836 . The conglomerate of the Distrito Federal Centroamericano was later divided into the more traditional, more powerful Districtos. Panchimalco came to the Distrito de Santo Tomás in 1865 . On February 7, 1879, the center of Panchimalco was upgraded to a villa. In 1954 the film "El Pirata Negro" was shot in Panchimalco, in which the inhabitants acted as extras. The dead Morena Celarié (1922–1969) was found at the touristically attractive La Puerta del Diablo , in the Cantón Planes de Renderos . On May 24, 1982, more than 150 bodies of victims of death squads were dumped at the Puerta del Diabolo .
