Panipuri ( Hindi पानी पूरी pānī pūrī ; literally “water in deep-fried bread”) is a snack ( chat ) that is popular in northern India , Nepal , Bengal and Pakistan and is mainly bought on the street , but can also be made yourself. There are different variations in terms of seasoning and sauce. Depending on the region, the dish is also known as Phuchka ( Bengali ফুচকা ), Pakodi , Phulki , Gup Chup or Gol Gappa . The dish consists of a round, hollow puri (deep-fried bread) dough made from wheat flour . The fully baked and opened dough shell is filled with a specially prepared spicy potato- based filling (with onions , etc.). The whole thing is also filled up with a specially prepared watery sauce ( pani = water) so that it can be consumed. A popular mix of spices ( masala ) for this is chat masala .
