Panormos ( Greek Πάνορμος ( m. Sg. )) Is a village in the municipality of Mylopotamos , district of Geropotamos , in the former prefecture of Rethymno . It is located on the north coast of Crete , on the Cretan Sea , around 25 kilometers east of Rethymno .

The roots of this village go back to the Minoan period when Panormos was the port of the Minoan settlement Eleutherna . In the village itself there are some remains of the Venetian port fortifications (for the most part they have disappeared under the concrete breakwater). From early Christian times, the remains of a stem Basilica , which the Holy Sophia was consecrated.

Until the 1930s Panormos was an important trading center, from which the entire Milopotamos district was supplied with goods. The 25 or so listed, neoclassical houses date from this period . According to the inscription above the portal, the probably oldest belonged to a Turkish trader.

The older inhabitants still have vivid memories of three or four steamers anchored in the bay of Panormos and the goods being transported inland on donkeys or mules .
