Panthea is a genus ofthe owl butterfly family (Noctuidae).

features

The species of the genus Panthea are robust, medium-sized noctuids with a wingspan of around three to six centimeters. The basic color of the fore wings is white or gray. The drawing consists of five black cross lines. On the other hand, the blemishes are often absent or only weakly indicated. The forewings are roughly triangular, the outer edge is oblique. The upper sides of the hind wings are lighter than the forewings and usually faintly drawn with indistinct gray bands or, in some species, uniformly gray.

A sexual dimorphism is usually developed, with the females mostly being larger and a little darker. The antennae of the males are comb-shaped, those of the females are simple. In both sexes, the mouthparts are greatly reduced and not functional. The eyes are hairy.

In the male reproductive system, the valves are relatively simple, but very severely sclerotized. The stapler is well developed. The uncus is laterally narrowed and triangular in cross section. It has a high crown, which gives the uncus the shape of a bird's head (with a beak) when viewed from the side. The females have a well-developed or sclerotized sterigma (genital plate) and a simple oval or elongated bursa copulatrix that has no appendages (or signa) inside.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The genus Panthea is predominantly distributed Holarctic . In America the distribution area extends in the south to Central America . In East Asia it extends to Japan and Taiwan .

Way of life

The kinds of the kind are nocturnal. The caterpillars of most species feed on the needles of various types of conifers . Pupation takes place in a dense cocoon , the pupa overwinters (if known).

Systematics

The genus includes 13 to 15 species depending on the author.

Panthea ronnyi Thony , 1996 was transferred by Speidel & Kononenko (1998) to the genus Tambana Moore , 1882.
