The Panzerkaserne Böblingen (American name: Panzer Kaserne , formerly Ludendorff barracks ) is located in the district town of Böblingen in Baden-Württemberg .

Pre-war and World War II

In the spring of 1936, 620 hectares of forest, almost half of the forest in the city of Böblingen, were felled in order to build new barracks. The Heeresbauamt Stuttgart had received the order to start the construction projects in Vaihingen ( Kurmärker barracks ) and Böblingen. The construction management was entrusted to the engineer Korsch († January 29, 1943). After the final approval of the site plans, the actual construction work on the barracks began on October 1, 1936 .

Persistent rainy weather made the work on the "jungle construction site", as it was soon called, more difficult, and there were soon difficulties in obtaining materials. Nevertheless, the deadlines were essentially not exceeded. The construction work was carried out in day and night shifts, regardless of the bad weather conditions. It is noteworthy that there were no major accidents during the entire construction period. The barracks were completed in record time, some buildings in just 46 working days in the shell, although 60 days were estimated according to the planning.

8th Panzer Regiment

On April 1, 1938, the 8th Panzer Regiment moved into the new barracks and was officially welcomed with a grand ceremony on April 9, 1938. On this occasion, the regimental commander, Colonel Johann Haarde († February 8, 1945) thanked him from the tower hatch of his tank for the words of welcome and assured that the soldiers would like to move into their new home with an open heart. On April 20, 1939, the regiment left the barracks to be transferred to Milowitz near Prague . Lieutenant Colonel Botho Henning Elster also served in the regiment .

US armed forces

After the end of the war , US Army units moved into the former tank barracks - as agreed on July 7, 1945, when the French occupying forces had left the Boeblingen district . The buildings, some of which were badly damaged by bombs, were repaired by the American occupying forces and by German craftsmen and workers.
