Paola Verenice Pabón Caranqui (born January 28, 1978 in Ibarra ) is an Ecuadorian feminist lawyer and prefect of the Pichincha province .

Career

She graduated in law at the Universidad Central del Ecuador from. She later completed a master's degree at the Rafael Landívar University in Guatemala.

From 1999 to 2006 she was a member of the Izquierda Democrática , from 2006 she was a member of the Movimiento PAÍS . whose managing director she was later for the urban area of Quito .

In the parliamentary elections in 2009 she was elected representative in the National Assembly (Ecuador) of the Pichincha Province . In 2013 she was re-elected in the National Assembly elections (Ecuador) . During this mandate she was a member of the Commission of Autonomous Governments for two sessions. From October 2009 to May 2013 and July 2013 to July 21, 2015, she was also the coordinator of the Movimiento PAÍS Group for Women's Rights.

In May 2017 she was confirmed in this position by the now-elected President Lenín Moreno . In August 2017, she resigned from office after discovering the fact that Moreno continued to accuse the previous government of Rafael Correa of corruption.

In February 2019 she was elected as a candidate for the Fuerza Compromiso Social to be prefect of the Pichincha province . Her election manifesto was entitled "La Nueva Pichincha" and advocated strengthening production, tourism and road construction. She took office on May 14, 2019.

Controversy

In October 2013, she and MP Gina Godoy tabled a motion to discuss the decriminalization of rape abortion . The motion was supported by a further 19 MPs from the ruling party, including the Vice-President of Parliament, Rosana Alvarado . The President Rafael Correa reacted violently and described the attempted impulse for a legislative initiative as "treason" and threatened to resign if this debate were put on the agenda. Pabón withdrew the application in front of this threat. On October 29, 2013, the Movimiento PAÍS Ethics Committee suspended the party's MPs from their mandates for a month. This suspension caused astonishment within the party, which parliamentarians like Virgilio Hernández Enriquez also expressed .

On October 14, 2019, Paola Pabón was arrested at her home in Quito. The public prosecutor's office is investigating the allegation that she has called for the looting and destruction of public goods in Quito and other cities. At the trial date on October 15, 2019, the Pichincha Provincial Court ruled on remand. A detention test date on November 20, 2019 also ordered the continuation of pre-trial detention. On the morning of December 25, 2019, Pabón was released on the basis of a court order that allowed her to resume her post as Prefect of Pichincha the day after her release.
