Paolo Veneziano
Paolo Veneziano (* before 1333 , † after 1358 ; also Paolo da Venezia ) was a Venetian painter of the late Middle Ages .
Life
Paolo Veneziano came from a Venetian family of artists. He worked in a workshop with his sons Marco, Luca and Giovanni, who occasionally signed works with Paolo. He signed his works with Paulus de Veneciis . He was the official court painter under Doge Andrea Dandolo . Commissioned by Andrea Dandolo, he painted the Pala Feriale for the Pala d'oro of San Marco , a panel with scenes from the life of St. Mark, which the Pala d'oro covered on working days.
Paolo Veneziano is considered the founder of an independent Venetian painting. He mixed elements of the Byzantine tradition prevailing in Venice with more modern elements of the Gothic . In his pictures there are hardly any influences from the painting coming from Florence , as it was to be seen near Venice during his lifetime in the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua, which Giotto painted .
Occasionally Paolo Veneziano was and is seen as the painter of the Washington Coronation of Mary .
