The Papafjörður is despite the name a lagoon in southeast Iceland .
It is located in the western part of the Lónsvík behind the Fjörur spit , east of the Vestrahorn and west of the mouth of the Jökulsá í Lóni . The lagoon is about 10 kilometers wide and extends a maximum of 3 kilometers into the country, in places only 200 meters. Only in the west at Papós is there access to the open sea. On the land side runs the ring road 
, which then leads through the Almannaskarðsgöng .
