The mountain Klifatindur is located in Iceland . It is located about 15 km southeast of the town of Höfn in southern Iceland and is 889  m high. An important part of this mountain range is the Vestrahorn (757 m). In front of it is the pointed Brunnhorn.

Emergence

The Klifatindur was created in the Ice Age . The mountain range consists of several steep mountain peaks. Klifatindur itself is the highest peak, another is the Kambhorn . The mountains are the remains of a large central volcano that was active here near Lón about 6-7 million years ago.

Vestrahorn and Eystrahorn

The Vestrahorn is part of the Klifatindur. It concerns with him and the other side of the bay Lón opposite Eystrahorn presumably intrusions . During the Ice Age, the glaciers abraded layers of rock from 1,000 to 2,000 m thick. This is how you can see the intrusions today.

Rock types

Both the Vestrahorn and the Eystrahorn consist of two different deep rocks: Gabbro and Granophyr . Sometimes rock can also be found in which one type of rock forms inclusions in the other. The same can be explained by the following process: First, basic magma can collect here in a pocket or crevice, then this rhyolite magma is injected into this rhyolite magma in a pulsating rhythm . It does happen that basic and acidic magma originate in the same magma chamber .

Rockclimbing

There are several ways to climb the Klifatindur. A tour that starts at the upper part of the Almannaskarðsweg is particularly recommended .
