The Gunung Papandayan ( Indonesian Gunung = "mountain") is a stratovolcano in Indonesia . It has an altitude of 2665 m and is one of the active volcanoes in the country.
General information
Indonesia has the highest density of volcanoes in the world and is part of the so-called " Pacific Ring of Fire ". The Ring of Fire is an extensive area in the Pacific Ocean with regular earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. There are 128 active volcanoes there, 65 of which are classified as dangerous.
The Papandayan is located on the Indonesian island of Java in the province of West Java , 47 km southeast of the provincial capital Bandung in a densely populated area. It has a caldera up to 1.8 km wide , in which there are several younger and older craters and fumaroles.
Eruptions
During the first eruption in historical times in 1772, the northeast flank collapsed. The resulting debris avalanche destroyed 40 villages and killed almost 3,000 people.
Further outbreaks took place in 1923 and 1942.
The last outbreak occurred in November and December 2002. Large areas of forest on the east side of the volcano were destroyed by phreatic eruptions .
Current activities
Since August 4th 2007 the Papandayan shows increased activity again. On August 13, 2011, the status was raised to level III (increased readiness) and the area was closed to non-residents.
