The Para is a river in the north of Suriname , in the districts of Brokopondo and Para . It is a left tributary of Suriname and arises in the savannah landscape of the Para and Brokopondo districts from several streams, of which the Para and Saramacca greek are the best known. After the union of these streams near the village and the former Berlijn plantation, the left tributary Sabakoe and then the most important right tributaries, the Carolina and the Buffels, flow into it. The Buffelskreek receives a lot of water from the union of the Anjoemara and Malasi brooks, both of which arise in the savannahs of the Brokopondo district. In the old coastal area, the Para takes up the Coropina as a left tributary, together with the Tawaycoura and north of Overtoom, the Jawasi. Flowing further north, it takes up the Pararac as a left tributary and flows into Suriname at the Houttuin plantation, near the town of Paranam . Fort Para was located here on the left bank from 1685 to 1740.

The Para is a narrow but deep river. From its origin to shortly after the confluence with the Coropina it is a savannah river.
