Paraire Henare Tomoana († April 15, 1946 , also known as Friday ) was a well-known Māori leader from the Iwi of the Ngāti Kahungunu in the Hawke's Bay region . He was born in Waipatu or Pakowhai, the son of Henare Tomoana . The year of his birth is unknown, the obituary in the Daily Telegraph in Napier said that he died at the age of 78 (after that he would have been born in 1868), the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography gives 1874-1875 as the year of birth. Tomoana attended Te Aute College and was a member of the local Young Māori Party group . He edited the Māori newspaper Toa Takatini and composed several well-known songs in Māori : E Pari Ra , Hoera Te Wake Nei and Hoki Hoki . He is also known in connection with the well-known song Pokarekare Ana , of which he published an arrangement from 1917 in 1921. He was an Anglican lay preacher.

At his death he was a recognized authority on the oral traditions of the Māori and weather forecasting according to the Māori methods. He attended every major Māori gathering on the southern North Island for four to five decades.
