Argilos ( Greek Παραλία Άργιλος Paralia Argilos ) is a beach in the southeast of the Greek island of Crete . It is one of the beaches of Ambelos ( Παραλίες της Αμπέλου ) on the coast of the Levantine Sea and belongs to the settlement of Xerokambos ( Ξερόκαμπος ) of the municipality of Sitia ( Σητεία ).

Location and description

Argilos is located about 450 meters north of the small peninsula Trachilos ( Ακρωτήριο Τράχηλος ). The buildings of the scattered settlement of Xerokambos extend approximately 650 meters inland to the northwest of the beach. It is bordered in the north by boulders on the beach and in the south by low rocks that reach into the water. North to the beaches close Hiona ( Παραλία Χιώνα ), also Ambelos ( Παραλία Άμπελος ) called Vourlia ( Παραλία Βούρλια ) and the central beach ( Κεντρική Παραλία ) to of Xerokambos. In the south, Argilos passes through a gap in the rock into Gerondolakkos beach ( Παραλία Γεροντόλακκος ).

View from the south

Argilos stretches out in front of a cliff of bright rocks. They gave the beach its name, Argilos means loam or clay (earth). The rocks consist of strongly fragmented white marl that was formed in the Pliocene and has a high proportion of clay. The steep coast forms the eastern boundary of the hill Farmakokefalo ( Φαρμακοκέφαλο ), on which the church of Agios Nikolaos ( Άγιος Νικόλαος ) and the archaeological site of the Hellenistic settlement of Xerokambos are located. The latter is partially identified with the ancient Ampelos .

Argilos beach is about 100 meters long and its maximum width is 15 meters. The beach, which leads flat into the sea, has a few slabs of rock on the shore and there are individual larger boulders in the shallow water area. It is popular with bathers to soften fragments of the marl from the rock wall in the water and apply them to the skin. At the same time, the cliffs offer protection from the frequently occurring strong winds. In 1996 the northern beach Vourlia was designated as bathing water, the validity of which is shown for the entire coastal area from the central beach to Gerondolakkos in the south. Since 2010, the water quality has been regularly checked in accordance with the EU Bathing Water Directive and has always been rated excellent since 2012. ,

Access

Xerokambos can be reached via country roads from Ziros ( Ζίρος ) in the west or Zakros ( Ζάκρος ) in the north. An access road leads from the west to Vourlia beach , in front of which there is an unpaved parking lot, on which vehicles can be parked free of charge. From the parking lot a path leads south to the Farmakokefalo hill , another one past a private house to Chiona or Ambelos beach . Argilos can be reached via this along the shore to the south.
