Parananochromis caudifasciatus ( Syn .: Nanochromis caudifasciatus , Pelmatochromis caudifasciatus ) is a species of fish from the family of cichlids that occurs in southern Cameroon and in the mainland part of Equatorial Guinea in the catchment area of the rivers Dja , Nyong , Lokundje and Ntem .

features

Parananochromis caudifasciatus reaches a standard length of a maximum of 10 cm and has a moderately elongated body whose height is 29.7 and 36.2% of the standard length. The head length is 29.7 to 37.5% of the standard length. The snout, in fish the area between the front edge of the eye and the tip of the mouth, is short and rounded. The mouth is small, the lower jaw is slightly upward. The back and stomach profile are slightly curved. The tail stalk is usually higher than it is long. The caudal fin is rounded.

The anterior, upper lateral line is high, only separated from the base of the dorsal fin by one or two rows of scales.

Parananochromis caudifasciatus is gray to light brown in color, the belly is lighter. The cheek and gill cover are light yellow. Tear streaks are usually present. A dark longitudinal band runs from the gill cover along the middle of the body side to the tail stalk. There it can widen into a dark spot. The longitudinal band can also be broken up into a series of 8 to 9 spots. Vertical stripes run from these spots to the base of the dorsal fin. The visibility and shape of the dark drawing elements depends on the mood. The dorsal fin has a black border with a white line underneath. The same pattern shows the upper half of the caudal fin. The caudal fin usually shows a dense pattern of vertically arranged points, which are often fused together to form perpendicular bands. The pelvic fins are light blue, their front edge is white. The anal fin of the males is dark purple, that of the females is light purple. The soft-rayed section of the dorsal fin and the rear section of the anal fin are gray in both sexes with a few rows of light, bluish dots that are more clearly visible in the males than in the females. The breast and belly of sexually mature females are pink-purple.
