The Paravani ( Georgian ფარავანი ) is a lake in southern Georgia , on the territory of the Ninozminda municipal of the Samtskhe-Javakheti region .
It is located at 2073 m in the Javakheti plateau in the Lesser Caucasus . At 37.5 square kilometers, it is the largest lake in the country . At its deepest point, the lake is 3.3 meters deep. The average depth is 2.4 meters. It stores 90.8 million cubic meters of water.
The Paravani is surrounded by several mountains over 3000 meters high, in the east by the Javakheti Mountains , in the west by the Abul-Samsari . The Lake entfließt the Parawniszqali (even as the lake shortly Paravani Lake called), the plateau of Akhalkalaki crossed and then right into the Kura flows.
Near the lake is the Georgian Orthodox Foka Monastery from the 11th century. It is still inhabited by nuns today and was built on the spot where Saint Nino , who is said to have brought Christianity to Georgia, according to tradition, erected a vine cross .
