Paremballonura is a genus of bats in the family of smooth-nosed cantons (Emballonuridae), which occurs in Madagascar with two species. The type species of the genus, the Madagascar free- tailed bat ( Paremballonura atrata Peters, 1874) lives in the lowlands on the east coast of Madagascar, the Tsingy free- tailed bat ( Paremballonura tiavato Goodman, Cardiff, Ranivo, Russell and Yoder, 2006) lives on the west coast.

features

Paremballonura are small bats with skull lengths of 12.2 to 13.8 mm and a 35 to 41 mm long forearm. Both species have a long, somewhat shaggy dorsal fur that is light or gray-brown in the Madagascar free-tailed bat and blackish-brown in the Tsingy free-tailed bat. The ears are long and rounded and noticeably large (11 to 14 mm in the Tsingy free-tailed bat and 15 to 19 mm in the Madagascar free-tailed bat). The inner section of the tragus is convex and shows a distinct ax-shaped protrusion to the front. The calcar is slightly shorter than the shin. The nasal bone has an hourglass shape and a pronounced central furrow. There is a relatively narrow diastema between the first and second premolar .

Paremballonura species differ from the genus of the sliding-tailed bats ( Coleura ) in their small size , the lack of a central groove in the lower lip, a calcar that is shorter than the shin, a convex tragus and a dark, opaque flight membrane .

Systematics

The genus Paremballonura was only introduced in 2012 after a molecular genetic analysis showed that the tribe Emballonurini consists of two clades, one consisting of the species of the genus Emballonura occurring in Asia and the Indo-Pacific region and a second consisting of the Sliding-tailed bats ( Coleura ) from Africa and the Seychelles and the Malagasy species of the genus Emballonura . The genus emballonura was characterized paraphyletisch . After the introduction of the genus Paremballonura for the two Malagasy Emballonura species, Emballonura is again monophyletic .
