Park Chonghwa (born October 29, 1901 in Seoul , Korea , † January 13, 1981 in Seoul) is a South Korean writer and poet . His stage name is Wŏlt'an (월탄 | 月 灘).

Life

He studied the Chinese classics at a private school before receiving a Western education at Hwimun Middle School (휘문 의숙). He graduated in 1920 and was involved in founding the literary journal Literaturfreunde (문우 | 文友) in October of the same year . Also in 1920 he made his debut in the literary world when he published his poems Seelenschmerz der Jugend (오뇌 의 청춘) and Milchfarbene Straßen (우유 빛 거리) in the first edition of the journal Rosendorf (장미촌). In 1922 his works Back to the Secret Room (밀실 로 돌아가다) and Lamentation (만가) appeared in the first issue of the magazine Weisse Woge (백조). With the publication of his first collection of poems, Mourning Songs in the Black Room (흑 방비 곡 | 黑 房 悲 曲), he consolidated his reputation as a romantic poet. For the rest of his career, however, he turned to writing historical novels that supported Korean nationalism.

The Korean national identity continued to be the dominant theme in his work and life. Even during the height of the persecution during the colonial rule of Japan , Park refused to adopt a Japanese surname or become a member of pro-Japanese literary organizations, as many of his fellow writers did. During the colonial period, he published several novels, including The Blood of silk jacket (금삼 (錦衫) 의 피) The long-awaited spring (대춘 부 |待春賦) The night before (전야) and goodness (다정 불심 |多情佛 心). After the liberation, he continued to be active in the nationalist camp, serving as vice-president of the Pan-Korean Literary Association (전 조선 문필가 협회) and the Pan-Korean Federation for Cultural Organizations (전국 문화 단체 총연합회). He expressed his enthusiasm for the regaining of Korean independence in his work The Nation (민족), the last volume of a trilogy. Park then turned to earlier times to continue viewing Korean history from a nationalist perspective. Thanks to careful research and an awareness of history, he managed to keep many Korean traditions and customs alive in his works.
