Parliamentary and presidential elections in Paraguay in 2008

The parliamentary and presidential elections in Paraguay took place on April 20, 2008. The winner of the election was the opposition candidate Fernando Lugo , who was sworn in as the new president on August 15th.

About 2,800,000 citizens, a president and the national congress , consisting of the House of Representatives (Cámara de Diputados) with 80 members and the Senate (Senado) with 45 members, were called to vote. The legislative period (House of Representatives and Senate) and the non-renewable term of office of the President are five years. The turnout was 65 percent, from the age of 18 voting is compulsory . In addition to the President, Senators and MPs, 17 governors, 400 municipal council members and 18 members of parliament for the parliament of the free trade organization Mercosur were newly elected .

According to the electoral commission's calculations, the voter turnout was 65 percent, the highest in a presidential election since the end of General Alfredo Stroessner's military rule .
