Lino César Oviedo Silva (born September 23, 1943 in Juan de Mena , † February 2, 2013 in the Presidente Hayes Department ) was a general and commander in chief of the Paraguayan armed forces and a coup .

Life

During his military career, which he began on March 6, 1958 at the age of 14 at the Mariscal Francisco Solano López military school (Colegio Militar) and which he attended until December 13, 1962, Oviedo also completed a course in the Bundeswehr in the Federal Republic of Germany . In 1989 he was involved in the coup against the Paraguayan President Alfredo Stroessner . In 1997 he founded the Unión Nacional de Colorados Éticos (Unace) within the Partido Colorado . President Juan Carlos Wasmosy had Oviedo arrested in 1997 for an attempted coup . In 1998, the new President Raúl Cubas Grau released him . Oviedo went into exile, first afterArgentina , then to Brazil . On his return to Paraguay on June 28, 2004, he was arrested by the police and taken to the Viñas Cué military prison near Asunción to serve the remainder of his ten-year prison sentence for his attempted coup. He was released in 2007 and ran in the 2008 presidential elections as a candidate for his party Unión Nacional de Ciudadanos Éticos (UNACE). He got 22 percent of the vote. The winner was Fernando Lugo with about 40 percent of the vote.

Oviedo was also a candidate for the upcoming April 21, 2013 election. He died on February 2, 2013 in a helicopter crash aboard a Robinson R44 in the Presidente Hayes department north of Asunción near the Estancia La Mocha .

Oviedo, son of the war veteran from the 1932 to 1935 war between Paraguay and Bolivia and the civil war of 1947 Ernesto Oviedo and Eva Silva de Oviedo , was himself the father of six children Pamela Carolina (* 1971) and Cesar Ariel (* 1978 ), Fabiola (* 1979), Lino Cesar (* 1987), María Raquel (* 1989) and Lino Emanuel (* 1993). Most recently he was married to the chemist and pharmacist Rosalía Raquel Marín .
