Parliamentary election in Belgium 1977
The early election to the Belgian Parliament in 1977 was held on April 17, 1977. The 212 members of the Chamber of Deputies and the 106 directly elected out of 185 members of the Senate stood for election .
prehistory
After the parliamentary elections in 1974 , Leo Tindemans formed a four-party government consisting of Flemish ( CVP ) and Walloon Christian Democrats ( PSC ), as well as Flemish ( PVV ) and Walloon ( PRL ) liberals. In June 1974 the Rassemblement Wallon (RW) joined the government. The Tindemans II government collapsed in 1977 when RW did not approve the budget of the Ministry of Economic Affairs because it did not care enough about job losses in the Walloon steel industry. In addition, the RW issued an ultimatum to the government to promote the regionalization of Belgium. Thereupon the king dismissed the two ministers of the RW at the suggestion of the Prime Minister. The following government of Tindemans III held office until the early parliamentary elections.

Results
Eleven parties won seats in the Chamber of Deputies .
Due to the splitting of list connections, new list connections and party splits, it is difficult to compare the results with the 1974 election.
The previously ruling Christian Democrats and Liberals were able to win seats. The Flemish Christian Democrats (CVP) won six seats, the Walloon Christian Democrats (PSC) two seats. The Liberals who were also involved in the government were also able to improve. The liberals running nationwide as PVV / PLP in 1974 split into a Flemish (PVV) and a Walloon (PRLW) party. Together, these parties won three additional seats.
The socialists, who ran as BSP, PSB / BSP and PSB-RW in the various provinces, won three additional mandates. The Flemish VU lost two seats, the Communists (KPB / PCB) defended their two parliamentary seats.

Senate (upper house)
In addition to the chamber deputies, 106 out of 185 senators were directly elected.
Results
A total of eleven parties were elected to the Senate .
As in the Chamber, it is difficult in the Senate to compare the election results with the 1974 results.
The Christian Democrats (CVP and PSC) won two additional seats, the Liberals (PVV and PRLW) jointly provided as many senators as the previous party, PVV / PLP. The Socialists (BSP, PSB and PSB-RW) won three more seats than BSP / PSB and BSPRL in the 1974 election. The VU and the Communists (KPB and PCB) kept the number of seats.

Government formation
After winning the Christian Democrats and Liberals, the four parties together would have had an absolute majority of 113 of the 212 seats in the chamber. In order to advance the constitutional reform, a coalition government consisting of Christian Democrats (CVP and PSC), Socialists (PSD-BSP), the Francophone FDF and the Flemish VU was formed. The Tindemans IV government was able to rely on a majority of 152 seats. However, the government broke up in October 1978 after parts of the CVP no longer supported the Egmont Pact negotiated between the governing parties.
