The 1981 election to the Belgian Parliament was held on November 8, 1981. The 212 members of the Chamber of Deputies and the 106 directly elected out of 185 members of the Senate stood for election .

prehistory

In the legislative period after the 1978 parliamentary election , there were a total of five short-lived governments. The last one, M. Eysken's government, consisting of Christian Democrats ( CVP and PSC ) and Socialists ( PS and SP ), had been in office since April 6, 1981. It resigned on September 21, after the subsidy concept for the steel industry came through due to the blockade the Walloon Socialists (PS) failed. As a result, early parliamentary elections were scheduled for November 8, 1981.

Chamber (lower house)

Parties

The high voter turnout of over 90% was due to the compulsory voting in Belgium.

Results

13 parties won seats in the Chamber of Deputies .

The ruling Christian Democrats suffered a significant loss of votes, the Flemish Christian Democrats (CVP) lost 14 seats, and their Walloon sister party (PSC) lost seven seats.

In the case of the socialists who were also involved in the government, the Flemish SP held its seats, despite a slight loss of votes by both parties.

The Liberal parties won the election, the Flemish PVV won six additional seats, and the Walloon PRL gained nine seats. The Flemish nationalist VU gained six seats, the right-wing populist VB kept its mandate.
