prehistory
The Martens V government , consisting of Christian Democrats ( CVP and PSC ) and Liberals ( PRL and PVV ), had been in office since the 1981 election . Since the coalition parties could not agree on a constitutional reform, King Baudouin dissolved parliament on September 2, 1985 at the request of Prime Minister Wilfried Martens . The parliamentary elections that were then due took place on October 13th.

Parties
The high voter turnout of over 90% was due to the compulsory voting in Belgium. The governing parties were able to expand their parliamentary majority. The Flemish Christian Democrats ( CVP ) won six seats and the Walloon Christian Democrats ( PSC ) gained two seats. The Walloon Liberals ( PRL ) gained over 2% of the votes, but their number of seats remained the same. The Flemish Liberals ( PVV ) lost three seats.
The Walloon Socialists ( PS ) held the number of seats with a slight gain in votes, the Flemish Socialists ( SP ) won six additional seats.
The two green parties gained votes, the Walloon Greens ( Ecolo ) gained three seats, and the Flemish Greens ( Agalev ) won two additional seats.
The right-wing populist Vlaams Blok (VB) rose slightly and defended its seat, while the nationalist Flemish Volksunie (VU) lost four seats.
The FDF lost five of eight mandates, the RAD / UDRT lost two of its three mandates. The communists ( KPB / PCB ) were able to more than double their share of the vote, but lost both of their seats in the Chamber of Deputies.
