Parliamentary election in Belgium in 1987
The 1987 election to the Belgian Parliament was held on December 13, 1987. The 212 members of the Chamber of Deputies and the 106 directly elected out of 185 members of the Senate stood for election .
prehistory
Since the 1985 election , the Martens VI government , consisting of Christian Democrats ( CVP and PSC ) and Liberals ( PRL and PVV ), had been in office. Due to the still unresolved language dispute in Voeren , which had led Prime Minister Wilfried Martens to resign in 1986 , the government resigned on October 21, 1987. King Baudouin then entrusted Martens with the leadership of a transitional government based on the same four parties and scheduled new elections for December 13th.
Chamber (lower house)
Parties
The high voter turnout of over 90% was due to the compulsory voting in Belgium. The four parties involved in the government were able to maintain their parliamentary majority, but had to accept a loss of mandate. The Walloon Christian Democrats ( PSC ) had to give up a mandate, despite a very small gain in votes, the Flemish Christian Democrats ( CVP ) lost six seats. The Walloon Liberals ( PRL ) lost one seat, while the Flemish Liberals ( PVV ) gained three seats.
The Walloon Socialists ( PS ) won five seats, the Flemish Socialists ( SP ) were able to maintain the number of seats with slight gains in votes.
The two Green parties gained votes, but the Walloon Greens ( Ecolo ) lost two seats and the Flemish Greens ( Agalev ) gained two additional seats.
The right-wing populist Vlaams Blok (VB) gained slightly and doubled the number of seats to two, while the nationalist Flemish Volksunie (VU) held its 16 seats. The FDF kept its three mandates, the RAD / URT only got 0.1% and lost its only seat in the chamber.
