Parodia arnostiana is a species of the genus Parodia in the cactus family(Cactaceae). Thespecific epithet arnostiana honors the Czech cactus lover Arnost Janousek.

description

Parodia arnostiana grows individually and rarely sprouts. The green to dark green flattened to flat spherical shoots reach heights of growth of 4 to 6 centimeters and diameters of 4 to 8 centimeters. The apex of the shoot is sunken and thornless. The 21 to 30 ribs are arranged in a spiral. The circular areoles on them are covered with white wool. The one to three yellowish brown to brownish red central spines have lengths of 0.5 to 2 centimeters and are often difficult to distinguish from the radial spines. The twelve to 16 curved, cloudy straw-yellow to brownish red radial spines are up to 7 millimeters long.

The sulfur-yellow flowers reach a diameter of 7 to 7.5 centimeters and lengths of up to 6 centimeters. Your pericarpel and the flower tube are covered with white wool and brown hair. The scar is dark red. The green, spherical fruits are 1.6 to 1.8 inches long and 1.2 to 1.4 inches in diameter. The fruits contain cap-shaped black seeds that are humped.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Parodia arnostiana is common in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul .

The first description as Notocactus arnostianus by Kamil Lisal and Jiri Kolarik was published in 1986. Andreas Hofacker placed the species in the genus Parodia in 1998 . A nomenclature synonym is Ritterocactus arnostianus (Lisal & Kolarik) Doweld (1999).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Critically Endangered (CR) ", d. H. listed as critically endangered.
