Parodia curvispina is a species of plant from the genus Parodia in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet curvispina is derived from the Latin words curvus for 'bent' and -spinus for 'thorny' and refers to the curved thorns of the species.

description

Parodia curvispina grows individually. The green, depressed spherical shoots reach a diameter of up to 5 centimeters. The roughly 24 straight ribs are subdivided into small humps. The areoles on them are white. The single yellowish central spine is bent downwards. It has a length of 0.5 to 2 centimeters. The ten to 13 inwardly curved radial spines are 0.4 to 1 centimeter long.

The sulfur-yellow flowers reach lengths of 4 to 6 centimeters. The scar is dark red-brown. The hollow green fruits contain bag-shaped, black seeds that are finely tuberous.

Distribution and systematics

Parodia curvispina is common in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul .

The first description as Notocactus curvispinus by Friedrich Ritter was published in 1979. David Richard Hunt placed the species in the genus Parodia in 1987 . Nomenclatory synonyms are Ritterocactus curvispinus (F.Ritter) Doweld (1999) and Notocactus arnostianus f. curvispinus (F.Ritter) N. Gerloff & Neduchal (2004, nom. inval. ICBN -Article 11.4).
