Parodia maassii is a species of plant in the genus Parodia from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors Wilhelm Maass, the1907 official secretary of the German Cactus Society , who came from Berlin-Zehlendorf .
description
Parodia maassii grows spherical to elongated and is 7 to 15 centimeters wide. The rounded, white woolly part is surmounted by brown thorns . 13 to 21 ribs are protruding bumpy and flatter at the bottom. In old age they are twisted spirally. The 8 to 15 radial spines are only 5 to 10 millimeters long and honey-yellow to whitish in color. The four central spines are stronger, curved downwards, partly hooked and curved and light brown in color. The flowers are large, woolly with long white hairs. The sepals are elongated and brick-red. The fruit is dry.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Parodia maassii is common in southern Bolivia and in the extreme northwest of Argentina ( Jujuy ) at altitudes of 2500 to 4000 meters.
It was first described as Echinocactus maassii in 1907 by Emil Heese (1862-1914). Alwin Berger placed the species in the genus Parodia in 1929 .
