Parodia nigrispina is a species of plant in the genus Parodia in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet nigrispina means '(Latin nigrispinus) blackthorn'.

description

Parodia nigrispina has a short cylindrical growth, often forms groups with parallel, upright shoots due to basal branching that reach heights of up to 40 centimeters and a diameter of 16 centimeters. The 20 to 24 ribs are spaced 2 to 2.5 centimeters apart. The areoles on them are covered in white wool near the apex of the shoots. The nine to ten grayish white to yellow or dark gray thorns are darkly pointed and cannot be divided into central and radial spines. They are twisted and curved, wire-like and stiff and have a length of 2.5 to 6 centimeters.

The funnel-shaped yellow flowers reach a diameter of 7 centimeters and lengths of up to 6.5 centimeters. Your pericarpel is covered with hairy scales in the armpits of which there are bristles. The scar is light yellow. The shiny brown spherical fruits have a diameter of up to 1.5 centimeters. The fruits contain cap-shaped, matt black seeds that are somewhat grainy and humped.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Parodia nigrispina is widespread in Paraguay in the Caaguazú department on flat rock plateaus between grasses and shrubs.

The first description as Echinocactus nigrispinus by Karl Moritz Schumann was published in 1899. Fred H. Brandt placed the species in the genus Parodia in 1982 . Nomenclatory synonyms are Malacocarpus nigrispinus (K.Schum.) Britton & Rose (1922, incorrect name ICBN -Article 11.4), Notocactus schumannianus var. Nigrispinus (K.Schum.) Y.Itô (1952), Notocactus nigrispinus (K.Schum. ) Buining ex G.Schäfer (1979, nom. Inval. ICBN -Article 33.3), Notocactus schumannianus subsp. nigrispinus (K.Schum.) T. Engel (1990, nom. inval. ICBN -Article 33.3), Notocactus schumannianus f. nigrispinus (K.Schum.) Neduchal (1997), Eriocephala schumanniana var. nigrispinus (K.Schum.) Y.Itô (1957, nom. inval. ICBN -Article 33.3) and Eriocactus nigrispinus (K.Schum.) F.Ritter (1979, incorrect name ICBN -Article 11.4). Another synonym is Echinocactus schumannianus var. Longispinus F. Haage (1898).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Endangered (EN) ," d. H. listed as endangered.
