Parodia stockingeri is a species of Parodia in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet stockingeri honors the Brazilian sculptor, painter and cactus lover Francisco Stockinger (1919–2009).
description
Parodia stockingeri initially grows individually and later forms groups. The spherical to short cylindrical shoots reach heights of growth of 7 to 9 centimeters and diameters of up to 4 centimeters. The twelve to 14 ribs are arranged vertically. The circular areoles on them are grayish. Amber-colored to light yellow, somewhat flexible thorns arise from them . The four central spines have lengths of up to 1.5 centimeters. One in front of them is longer than the rest. The 14 radial spines are 0.8 to 1 centimeter long.
The short funnel-shaped bright yellow flowers reach lengths of 3.5 to 4 centimeters and diameters of 4 to 5.5 centimeters. The scars are dark red. The greenish to reddish, spherical fruits have lengths of up to 0.7 centimeters. The fruits contain helmet-shaped black seeds that are slightly humped.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Parodia stockingeri is common in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul near São Borja .
The first description as Notocactus stockingeri by Karl-Heinz Prestlé was published in 1985. Andreas Hofacker and Pierre Josef Braun placed the species in the genus Parodia in 1998 . Further nomenclature synonyms are Peronocactus stockingeri (Prestlé) Doweld (1999, incorrect name ICBN -Article 11.4) and Notocactus minimus var. Stockingeri (Prestlé) N. Gerloff & Neduchal (2004).
In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Endangered (EN) ," d. H. listed as endangered.
