The Stranka demokratske akcije ( German  Party of Democratic Action , SDA for short ) is a Bosniak- dominated political party in Bosnia and Herzegovina . Its founding was announced in March 1990. At the founding congress on May 26, 1990 in Sarajevo, Alija Izetbegović was elected chairman. According to the program of the time, the party saw itself as a representative of all Muslim citizens of Yugoslavia . Izetbegović led the party from 1990 to 2001. The SDA was always involved in the government of Bosnia and Herzegovina from 1990 to today, with the exception of the years 2000–2002. In every parliamentary election since 1990, the SDA became the strongest political force in the Bosniaks .

At the third party congress of the SDA on October 13, 2001, Sulejman Tihić was elected as the new party leader of the SDA. He oriented the party, long considered the national party of the Bosniaks, towards the political center. This course is controversial within the party. After Tihić's defeat in the elections to the state presidency against Haris Silajdžić , the Islamic conservative wing of the party increased its criticism of the party's course. However, the SDA was again the strongest party (by seats) in the parliamentary elections on October 1, 2006 and was able to confirm its position in the 2008 local elections.

On May 26, 2009 Sulejman Tihić was re-elected as chairman. After Tihić's death in September 2014, Bakir Izetbegović , the son of the first chairman, took over the leadership of the party. His position was strengthened by the successful re-election as a Bosniak member of the State Presidium. Since 2018, Šefik Džaferović has been a member of the State Presidium for the SDA.

The SDA sees Bosnia and Herzegovina as a “democratic, regionalized, social and secular state based on the rule of law with three administrative levels” , national, regional and local. The two entities are to be replaced by five or more multiethnic regions, which are formed according to economic, historical, transport and cultural principles.

The SDA has observer status in the European People's Party . The SDA has a youth organization called Asocijacija mladih SDA and a women's organization called Asocijacija Žena .

Sister parties of the SDA exist in Croatia , Serbia ( Sandžak ) and Kosovo .
