Parveen Shakir

Parveen Shakir (born November 24, 1952 in Karachi , † December 26, 1994 ) was a Pakistani poet, educator and government employee.

biography

Shakir studied English literature and linguistics . She worked as a teacher for nine years before becoming an officer in the Pakistani Customs Service. In 1990 she taught at Trinity College in Connecticut , USA . In 1991, she earned a Masters Degree in Public Administration from Harvard University .

She was married to the doctor Naseer Ali, from whom she later divorced. In 1994 she died in a traffic accident at the age of 42. She left a son, Syed Murad Ali.

Poetry

Her poems brought a breath of fresh air to Urdu poetry. She wrote in the feminine first person, which is rarely used even by women in Urdu poetry. She addressed the female perspective of love and related social aspects. Criticism compared her to the Iranian poet Forugh Farrochzad .

Her first book, Khushboo , won the Adamji Award , Pakistan's highest literary prize. She later received the Pride of Performance award.
