Pascal Arimont [ pas.kal a.ʁi.mɔ̃ ] (born September 25, 1974 in Malmedy ) is a Belgian politician of the Christian Social Party ( CSP ). He has been a member of the European Parliament since July 1, 2014 . Since June 18, 2015 he has also been chairman of the CSP .

Family and education

Pascal Arimont was born on September 25, 1974 in Malmedy as the youngest of four children. He grew up in Born ( Amel municipality ). There he lived on a farm in a three-generation house. He has two children with his wife.

Pascal Arimont first studied Classical Philology at the University of Liège (ULg) and graduated with a license in 1996. He then obtained a Masters in European Studies from RWTH Aachen University . At that time he was Parliamentary Assistant to MEP Mathieu Grosch (CSP).

In 1998 Arimont began studying law at the ( Université Libre de Bruxelles ) in Brussels and the Université catholique de Louvain in New Leuven , from which he graduated in 2002 with a license. After completing his law studies, he became a lawyer, first in a law firm in Brussels and then in a law firm in Sankt Vith and Malmedy. From 2006 he was a partner in a law firm. Since his election as MEP in May 2014, his professional activity as a lawyer has been suspended.

Political career

From 2006 to 2009 Arimont was a member of the Liège Provincial Council. From 2009 to 2014 he was parliamentary group leader of the CSP in the parliament of the German-speaking community . He was 2nd Secretary of the DG Parliament and a member of Committee I for General Policy, Local Authorities, Petitions, Finance and Cooperation.

He was the top candidate of the CSP for the elections to the Parliament of the European Union on May 25, 2014. Since the CSP won the most votes in the German-speaking constituency, he succeeded party friend Mathieu Grosch . Since then he has been a member of the EPP Group in the EU Parliament . He is an advisory member of the Parliament of the German-speaking Community. In the elections to the European Parliament in May 2019, he was able to return to the European Parliament.

In the 2014–2019 electoral term, Arimont was Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Regional Development and negotiator of the EU Parliament for INTERREG programs. He was a member of the Committee on Internal Market and Consumer Protection and negotiator for consumer law in Europe. In the 2019-2024 election period, Pascal Arimont is once again a full member of the Committee for Regional Development, which means that he can continue his work as INTERREG negotiator. He has been appointed the so-called Vice-Coordinator of his group in the Committee on Regional Policy. He is also a member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy and the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection.

Positions

For Arimont, cross-border projects represent a clear added value for the EU and its regions. In the Committee on Internal Market and Consumer Protection, he wants a clear basis for the better functioning of the European internal market and for increased protection of European consumers.

As a member of the European Union, he called for the negotiations on the TTIP free trade agreement to be halted and for the approval of glyphosate to expire once and for all .
