The Passage des Martyrs ( French for Passage of the Martyrs ) is a strait in the Géologie archipelago off the coast of the East Antarctic Adélieland . It separates the Carrel Island from the Rostand Island .
Mario Marret (1920–2000), leader of a French Antarctic expedition (1952–1953), named it on the assumption that it was a valley as Vallée des Martyrs . It was named after young emperor penguins who were driven here and died as a result of a storm . The name was adapted in 1978 to the actual nature of the geographical object.
