Passive remote sensing systems
Passive remote sensing systems (as opposed to active FE systems ) record the solar radiation reflected from the earth's surface as well as the thermal radiation emitted by the earth's surface itself . Wide areas of the electromagnetic spectrum can be evaluated.
Examples of passive systems are:
- Measuring cameras and aerial photographs (for black and white or color images of the earth's surface)
- Multispectral scanner in the reflective spectral range (for capturing the spectral reflective properties)
- Thermal imaging cameras in the emitted spectral range (for recording surface temperatures)
- passive microwave radiometer (for recording soil moisture and ocean salinity).
