Pasteli ( Greek παστέλι ( n. Sg. )) Is a traditional Greek sweet.

The classic pasteli consists of sesame seeds that are baked with honey to make a kind of brittle biscuits or bars. It is therefore particularly widespread in the area around Thessaloniki , where sesame is grown. There are also several Pasteli bakeries located there.

However, pasteli, which is made from almonds , peanuts , hazelnuts or pistachios , became increasingly popular throughout Greece . In addition to honey, glucose and sugar are also used for production.

The crispy bar-like pasteli typically sold at the periptero (kiosk) in Greece gets its hard consistency from the use of granulated sugar.

history

Already Homer mentions in the Iliad a cake made from honey and sesame called "Intrion" ( Greek  ἴντριον ). Even Herodotus mentions such a dessert, which was served with dances of boys and girls. At weddings in ancient Athens , arriving guests were served σησαμῆ , a mixture of roasted and crushed sesame seeds with honey. This custom continues: on the Cyclades , pasteli is still served to guests at weddings and baptisms, on donoussa traditionally on lemon leaves.
