The pastel goby or tail- spot sleeper goby ( Tateurndina ocellicauda ) from Papua New Guinea is a smaller, free-swimming freshwater goby from the family of sleeper gobies (Eleotridae). Because of its color, it is a popular aquarium fish.
features
The pastel gobies are up to seven centimeters long. Adult, old males have a pronounced, beefy head, while females have a rounded body. The anal fin of the females has a black border, but this distinguishing feature does not occur in some aquarium populations.
The closest relatives of the pastel goby from the monotypical genus Tateurndina are some species from the genus Mogurnda .
distribution
The gobies live in eastern Papua New Guinea, north of the Owen Stanley Mountains, in small rainforest streams with a gravelly bottom and underwater vegetation.
Way of life
Little is known of the natural way of life. It is reported that the pastel gobies live in groups in open water but close to the bottom of the soil. If disturbed, they flee into the vegetation at the edge of the water.
In the aquarium they do not have any particular requirements in terms of temperature, hardness or pH value. They prefer carnivorous food from invertebrates. Reproduction occurs after a couple finds a suitable hiding place. The female lays 40 to 200 eggs close together on a hard surface. The male guards the clutch in the immediate vicinity, fanning out fresh water with its pectoral fins, and hardly gets to eat. The fully developed larvae hatch after about 10 days. Pastel gobies are reserved and peaceful, but sometimes they nibble on the fins of other small fish.
